I Have Type 1 Diabetes But There Is No One With Diabetes In My Family?

Don’t feel like the long ranger. The same thing happened to me. Diabetes does not run in my family, but I got it anyway. —————————

Did you have a particularly nasty flu some weeks or months before you became diabetic? That’s what happened to me.
Also: No one in your family that you know of has diabetes. The thing is: You may not know if there was a genetic predisposition to developing type 1 diabetes if only a tenth of you got it, and you can only trace 8 direct ancestors back to the late 1800s. Back then, people died of all sorts of things that we can only ID now. Almost eveything has some genetic component.

Don’t worry, the majority of Type 1 diabetics have no family history. I myself was diagnosed at 16 with no family history. Although genetics can increase your chances of developing diabetes, it is not the sole factor. Actually, it is still kind of a mystery as to why and how Type 1 occurs. It is understood that the body attacks itself killing off beta cells which stimulate the production of insulin, but what triggers this is unknown. Eating too much sugar is a common misconception and has no direct tie to developing diabetes. Type 1 can be caused by genetic pre-disposition or simply luck of the draw.

its possible while type 1 is normally caused by genetics your ethnicity can also be a factor. For example
Native Americans and African Americans have a high rate of diabeaties because the orginal culture revolved around leaner foods and non-white flour. If you eat things differently from the rest of your family that could be a factor.
Or it could relate to a drug you took. Ask yourself what have I ingested recently or if you are a part of any drug trials.

Type 1 Diabetes has a strong genetic component. but genetics is not the ONLY reason one can get diabetes. In fact, ANYONE can get Type 1 Diabetes at any time. It is NOT limited to children (under the age of 25) and, as you point out, it is NOT limited to those with a family history.
Fact is, we don’t know for sure what causes Type 1 Diabetes, and that is why there is no cure. best guess right now is an auto-immune problem, but no one knows the EXACT cause.

I am the same. Type 1 can happen to anyone (usually in younger people). Diet and exercise have nothing to do with whether you get type 1 diabetes. It is possible that it is due to a genetic deformity (when you were created in the uterus). It is like a timebomb waiting to explode. The process that is thought to happen as you ‘get’ type 1 diabetes is….
your body has defensive mechanisms within it. So if you accidentally cut yourself and germs get in, then there are things that kill off the germs so you do not get sick. The reason they know to kill off the germs is because each one of your cells in your body have recognition receptors on them (like identification tags). The germs will not have thes tags, so they will be destroyed.
Now what happens with type 1 is that the defensive mechanisms in your body do not recognise the cells in you pancreas and therefore attack them, so they no longer can do there job…create insulin. There are many theories as to why this happens. Some people believe it can be caused by you having a cold or a virus and your body just goes on overdrive when trying to get rid of the germs, while others believe that hormones and growth (as in childhood and adolescents) cause the pancreas to stop making insulin.
Just so tht you no there is only a small chance of passing diabetes onto your children. I can’t remeber the exact figures but it’s under 6% (even if your partner have diabetes too). All the best :)

Join the club I’m type 1 with no family history as well. The first responder is incorrect that it has anything to do with your diet. Type 1 is not caused by the foods you eat. For me sadly I know my immune system has become my enemy as I have 3 auto-immune disorders none of them caused by food. Best of Luck.

A person can have the gene anomaly that causes type 1 and never develop it. They do, however pass the anomaly along to their descendants. You will too if you have children. I’m a type 2 myself and its not what I wanted but I got it anyway.

Type 1 diabetes does not always have a genetic link. It is caused when the cells in the pancreas stop producing enough insulin for your body to function properly. This my be due to damage due to illness or from trauma.

My son has type 1 diabetes and there’s no family history of the disease either. Type 1 is an autoimmune problem, it has a very weak genetic link.

Yes there is-yourself. Perhaps others have diabetes that has not yet shown itself . From what I have read, diabetes does not always become apparent in all cases at the same age.

An interesting question with many good answers. I agree with the top contributors and most of the others who answered. Enlightening answers.

Don’t feel like the lone ranger either. I’m the only type 1 in a big big family.

Same here. Type one is autoimmune, so its not really genetics.
