21 September 2009 139 views 4 Comments

He injects insulin, and i don’t know what else, but he don’t follow a diabetic diet nor does he exercise. Plus not only our diet has lots of beef and pork. During the week he goes to work and comes home around 4:00 p.m we eat and he goes to the couch watch tv and next thing you know hes snoring. And this is an every day routine. No exercise what so ever. I won’t blame him for the most part cause he has one leg that he can not or has little strength to move. So he can not run or walk straight. Since he was a teen. What things can i say to him about diabetes that might scare him to get him to care more about hes health. So im asking please i really need help on this one you guys, hes my dad, he might not be the best dad but i do love him and i care about him!

Sorry to say, there’s very little you can do. Just be there, show concern, but don’t get too pushy. Scaring him isn’t likely to help. The choice is up to him.

    Hi,
You can get a couple of books on diabetes, then read them, start to make dinners and breakfast that complies with the diet plans, yet is normal enough that he will accept them.
You can get diabetes from his cookbook too! Think about that next time you are eating a bunch of meat and animal fats!
Make some oatmeal for breakfast, stir in some cinnamon, it will be a food that is absorbed slowly into the body, and will stay with him all morning long, so both of you can resist eating snacks.
Don’t blame him to much for falling asleep on the couch, it is a symptom of being diabetic. High blood sugar causes extreme fatigue. Yet if he ate less than 1/2 pound of meat with each meal, then he would have a better chance of avoiding that situation.
Try making rice with pork chops. For gravy, add 1/4 can of milk to come cream of mushroom soup, and add a can of mushrooms. Add curry powder to taste. (the mixture will get slightly yellow when the right amount of curry has been added.) This is gravy with very little animal fats in it.
This gravy is also really good over meatloaf, if you bake it in the oven, then once it is brown, and about 3/4 cooked, cover with this gravy mixture, and serve with rice. Make the meatloaf small, and add some cooked rice to it, with only about 1 pound of meatloaf for 3 servings.
This will make it necessary to fill up on the corn, rice, and other vegetables and salad served with the meal.
    Try these two books.
Dr Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes
The PH Miracle for Diabetes. By Dr. Young.
On page 13, there is a story of a guy like your dad who did not take care of himself, and was in intensive care for 5 days with sugar levels in the 1,100 range. That woke him up, but it was really his wife finding a better than standard treatment for diabetes that saved and prolonged his life. When his daughter got better, then he listened to the better advice.
Unfortunately, your dad will have to break out of his current habits for foods, and lower his sugar levels before the fatigue will go away, and he will want to exercise again.
I hope that you can get it into his head, perhaps by making a few meals like I described, it will work out for you.
You can also bake the pork, and then cover with the gravy, then serve with rice. The thing is you need to all eat in moderation. Like cooking one pork chop per person. Then fill up on the rice and other vegetables.
    Cheers!

You love your dad, so you must make your dad understand about diabetic rather make him scare of it.
The best diet for everyone is his/her regular diet but with restriction in energy type food ( carbohydrate, fat ).
There are no specific exercise for diabetes, all activity as long burn energy and can be done regularly, are ok.
Not easy to change someone lifestyle ( especially your dad ), but don’t give up. Keep trying.
Nice to know someone like you.
