An eleven year old diabetic girl died after her parents chose to pray rather than get her medical attention, treating her illness as a “test of faith”.
Your thoughts?
And please specify your religion if any.
Thanks

I am an antitheist, and therefore, against religious delusion in all it’s forms.
In my opinion, these parents are f*cking idiots.
Your god can’t save you anymore than the Easter Bunny can save you.
If you need proof of that fact, this story is it.
I think it’s likely that the parents didn’t know the exact condition which the child suffered from, since the article stated that it was undiagnosed.
However, when the child became comatose and unresponsive, they should have called for aid. They have a legal duty to do so. Never mind the moral or ethical duty.
When they failed to render aid, and the child subsequently died of a treatable condition, as a direct result of their failure to intervene, as the laws of the states require them to, they committed the criminal offense of negligent homicide, or one of its equivalents, depending on which state you are in.
I hope they rot in prison until the day they die…
The lives of the parents, because of their own stupidity, are destroyed already. Instead of focusing on punishment for what has already been done, people should focus on prevention.
Every child should be required, by law, to receive certain common health tests, such as those for diabetes, on a regular basis. If a child tests positive, appropriate medical care for the child should be provided–regardless of the desires of the parents.
I have no religion, and I have no interest in religion or anything that might remotely resemble it.
God said to never test him,.these parents did just that.
“Thou shalt not test thy lord, thy God”
It was good to pray for God to heal the child, but their hearts were not of faith, but expectation. They were expecting God to save the child if they prayed to him for it. Don’t these people realize that is testing God, and a grievous sin?
God had answered this woman long before she prayed to him. From what it sounds like, God had provided for her a way to save her daughter. She did not take it, instead she wanted to test the almighty.
I am a strong believer in the power of healing prayer for the sick — http://www.jimfeeney.org/powerofhealingp...
But my realistic approach has been to acknowledge that, although God is perfect, my faith is not necessarily perfect. My practice with my now-grown children was always to pray first. If there was no positive change in a reasonably short period of time, we got medical attention.
this is the STUPIDEST thing they have done in their entire life. they should of got her medical attention and prayed for her… its like…. to farmers are in two different droughts… one prays for rain and sits and does nothing. one prays for rain and goes out and works on his farm getting stuff ready… wich ones more likely to get it? the one who worked on his feild. the point is that yes they hsould of prayed, but they should of done everything in their power to help her also…. your not supposed to pray and thensit there and do nothing.
good they should be charged this is the goddam 21st century folk healing or faith healing is ignorant stupidity
im an atheist BTW
i find it detestable not to use any available proven resource and to choose woo woo crapola it doesnt work prayer doesnt work herbs and stuff dont work medically tested procedures work and its not like you cant justify it in the eyes of gawd it put these medical healers here for a purpose didnt it?
that is so sad cause diabetes is a simple thing to control to just sad
As a Baptist I see people taking things from the Bible out of context all too often. While the Bible does say that Jesus healed the sick, notice that a lot of those he healed had already been to the doctors of their time and couldn’t find a cure. Jesus’ healing was to attract the attention of the world and to fulfill the prophesies foretelling of His mission on Earth. I don’t agree with those religions that suggest that true believers have all kinds of power — healing, handling of snakes, tongues, etc. Paul tells us that we all have certain spiritual gifts which should be used together with others in the church. So, go to the doctors when illness strikes. It’s not some kind of Biblical heresy to seek Earthly help.
Happens. There are religions out there that believe God will heal, and we need to pray. Other religions handle poisonous snakes because there is a verse in the Bible that talks about vipers not hurting those with faith.
I can’t help but feel these groups are wrong. ( Maybe it’s me who doesn’t have enough faith.) But I was raised in a church (Salvation Army) that taught me God has provided us with doctors and medicines to help us. I am attending a Baptist church now. Still believe in medicines and doctors as well as prayer.
If I, or a loved one of mine, were sick, I’d be seeing a doctor and taking whatever meds the doc told me to. I’d also be asking all those in our church to pray for us.
I’m going to apologize ahead of time to those of you who will undoubtedly take offense to what I’m going to say, whether you are religious or not. I am so GOD DAMN SICK of ignorant, uncaring, intellectually challenged, inhuman, murdering, psychopathic, and hyper-religious zealots who are willing to make human sacrifices out of the children they supposedly love, for a MOTHER-EFFING CONCEPT that does not even exist! Along with the great sadness that I feel about this issue, every stinking time it comes up, is that I almost wish there was a hell, made of fire and piercing razor blades, for the maggot-infested brains who would perpetrate such an act on their own flesh and blood!
Some SANE member of the United States Congress or Senate MUST come forward with a bill that would outlaw such barbaric practices against ALL ORGANIZED RELIGIONS, so that children may live the four score and fifteen years of life that they are so entitled to, were it not for their moronic and imbecillic parents and their equally ignorant faiths!!!
Prayers do not work - if they did then the girl would not have died.
The Bible verses that are being addressed here which promise believing Christians healing powers along with whatsoever they may ask for, believing, in prayer are:
Mark 16:17-18 which says, “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”
James 5:14-15 which says, “Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up;”
Matthew 21:22 which says, “And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.”
SO WHERE ARE ALL THESE FAITH HEALERS TODAY HUH???
If any of the above ludicrous Bible promises were true there would be absolutely no need for any hospital, medicine, doctor, nurse, etc. There are numerous organizations which by their very existence strongly proves the Biblical fallacy of faith-healing is nothing but an ancient ignorant superstition.http://www.deism.com/harrison.htm

the religious FRAUD of faith healing
Reminds me of that family who wants to go to a spiritual healer instead of getting their son chemo, when he has a 90% chance of survival with chemo and 5% chance without…..
Thank goodness the judge actually values the kid’s life.
Much of allopathic medicine is barbaric, and an educated person will refuse it. I am told that a majority of doctors would not take Chemo, or recommend it for their family. However, when you have a problem, and do nothing about it, that is just stupid. (on the other hand, taking the doctors orders, like taking rat Poison for blood thinner, or horse urine for hot flashes, is sometimes about equally stupid)
That is child cruelty and they should be arrested and charged for murder. There is no excuse to let a child die, none what so ever. They are unfit parents and should be checked into a psyc-ward. Just because the world is modern doesn’t make it a bad thing.
Deist.
The child should have been taken away from then and put into state custody for her own protection.
If I decide that my god or gods wants me to starve my child to death, should I be allowed to retain custody?
I am an atheist/ Buddhist. My answer was exactly the same when I was a Catholic. My religious beliefs do not give me the right to endanger others.
It sounds like they failed the test of faith. It can be reasoned that God created drugs to cure the sick kid, and the parents defied God by not treating her. I wonder if their faith will survive. Their God doesn’t need to punish them, because they’ve brought punishment on themselves.

They never should have had children to begin with.
Just like the parent’s who’s kid has cancer.
They deserved what they got charged with.
On the bright side, the fact that their kids are dying puts a halt to their destructive ideology.
i think that if their religion ends up being real, which it isnt, they burn in hell for that.
that is unacceptable, this is yet another reason why religious nuts are idiots.
A perfect example of religious stupidity.
If they would have used some common sense, along with the advancements of science, the kid might be here today.

Happens all the time. I don’t even know why it makes the news, but I’m glad it does because it shows how detrimental religion can be.
i think that those kind of people should be in a mental hospital and their children taken away from them and but in the care of somebody with half a brain!
no religon
Disgusting.
Child abuse and MURDER.
i think the parents should have done both. God gives us doctors for a reason. Prayer helps, but not the only solution.
I prefer to consider it evolution in action. I’m sorry for the innocent girl though.
That’s truly sickening, people that stupid deserve everything they get
Very sad, and could have been prevented. But in the end, it isn’t our decision to make.
how sad! i am not sure if they should be charged but it is kind of sad to see people so taken by their faith that they cant act logically. i consider myself non religious
i live in wisconsin. these stupid idiots. if they had gone to the f-ing dr their daughter would be alive today.
They need to pray AND seek medical help.
My thoughts are that they are lunatics who deserve a nice long prison sentence.
